The number of restaurants and people involved in the sector has increased significantly over the decade up to 2019-2020 thanks to changes in lifestyle, increased mobility of people and demand for restaurants , according to a new survey.
The 2020 Hotel and Restaurant Survey was released on Sunday, the first of its kind in 10 years. He revealed that the number of restaurants increased to 4.36 lakh in 2019-2020, which is a 59% increase from ten years ago.
The survey, carried out by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), however, did not assess the impact of Covid-19 on the hotel and restaurants, which have been severely affected by the containment measures imposed by the government. to curb the spread of the disease. .
Akhtaruzzaman Khan, president of Bangladesh Hotel Restaurant Sweets Bakery Workers Union, said that up to 45% of people employed in hotels and restaurants have lost their jobs due to the closure of thousands of restaurants amid Covid-19.
“People in the area are now having miserable days. They have yet to get any support from the government,” he said.
The BBS survey reveals that hotels and restaurants employed 22.8 lakhs in 2019-2020, up from 9 lakhs ten years ago.
The sector’s contribution to gross domestic product increased to 0.75 percent. In terms of monetary value, it was 87,926 Tk crore in fiscal year 2019-2020 compared to 11,986 Tk crore in 2009-10.
“This shows that the hospitality industry has grown rapidly and that the sector is making a valuable contribution,” BBS said in the report.
Along with the growth of the sector, the cost of employment per person has almost doubled to reach 69,048 Tk per year in 2019-2020. The cost of employment includes wages, salaries and benefits in cash and not in cash.
The state agency conducted the survey by collecting data from 6,734 hotels and restaurants between March and April 2020.
Selim Raihan, executive director of the South Asian Economic Modeling Network, said the number of hotels and restaurants has grown sufficiently as people’s lifestyles and eating habits have changed, and demand for products has changed. food had increased during this decade.
“Today people buy food online,” he said.
Regarding the increase in the number of female workers in the sector, Prof Raihan said that if the BBS report had been correct, the sector would have lagged behind the garment industry in terms of female workers employed.
“But there hasn’t been as much of a female worker presence in the restaurant and hotel industry,” Raihan said, calling the increase in wages nominal.
The industry has been affected by Covid-19 tremendously, and this should have been included in the BBS report, he said.
“The Sanem conducts surveys every three months where hotels are also included. We have seen that many hotels have closed due to Covid-19. These issues should have appeared in this report.”
