‘Sad to see’ – Derby County old lad responds to transfer news

Former Derby County striker Martyn Waghorn has commented on former team-mate Graeme Shinnie’s move to Wigan Athletic.

The Rams released a statement on Sunday evening confirming the 30-year-old had joined the League One side.

Wigan reportedly paid a nominal fee of around £30,000 to sign the midfielder two and a half years after he arrived on a free transfer from former club Aberdeen.

Shinnie had just six months left on the three-year contract signed in 2019, and the club’s administrators were able to take the six-time Scottish international’s salary off the books.

Tributes poured in from fans and players following the fan favorite’s move to third.

Rams captain Tom Lawrence tweeted the announcement on Twitter with, “What a guy. Hope you all turn out well mate.”

Waghorn, who left Derby in the summer to join Coventry City on a free transfer, also shared his sadness over the situation.

“Sad to see,” the 31-year-old tweeted. “Best man and a great pro, was a fun mate. All the best.”

Shinnie has also spoken publicly since signing for Wigan and didn’t hesitate when asked about his thoughts on the transfer.

“I’m disgusted to have left Derby,” Shinnie said.

“They are a great club, and these are sad times in what they are going through. I really hope they can get through this.

“The opportunity has arisen to come here and I’m excited to take on the challenge of trying to get back to the championship.”
